Start9 use Core lighting or LND? I want to mine at Ocean but need CL?

Are you asking about what to use for your config? I would stick with the defaults initially. You can give your node a nice alias and color, but leave most of the rest as default. That will be excellent for most use cases, until you start branching out and thinking about becoming a routing node to help decentralize and strengthen the Lightning network. At that point you’ll need to decide on a balance between the minimum channel capacity and the fee you want to charge that works for the niche you want to fill. A larger min capacity will let you set the fees lower, since you have to rebalance less frequently. A smaller min capacity will make your node more desireable to connect with, but will require you to set the fees higher since it requires more frequent balancing. And there are other considerations, such as which nodes you want to create connections between, how much bitcoin you are comfortable having locked up in outbound liquidity, and so-on.

So too small a problem would 30000 sat min? Max I don’t know is there a down side to the max like 100000 to start? Leave the fee at default if it’s set now?

30,000 is a low minimum, which you would typically pair with a higher routing fee. But that won’t matter until you start promoting your node and getting folks to connect to it. You can always change it later when you get to that point, so I would just leave things as the default for now. It is unlikely that anyone is just going to randomly connect with your node (it takes work to build up connections)

There was no setting for min and max.

For LND, the two we are discussing are “Minimum Channel Size” and Advanced > Bitcoin Channel Configuration > Routing Fee Rate

Yes config min channel size and max channel size, fee is set by default.

All have default values, and are configurable.

Size ones were blank.

Ah, ok. I must have just copied the values from CLN then. You can set those to whatever. On mine, I have 10000 and 10000000

Hey Greg, Just to twist your noggin further I have not been able to route any payments out through your channel until this week, when a 2k sats payment went out. It routed to you / Start9 / Pauls LND and then onward 2 more hops. Do you know what the Start9 node’s fee for forwarding is? I have tried multiple small amounts and fees.

Yep…U twisted it alright. I have no clue. I haven’t changed anything. I’ll be back in 10 and Ill look into the logs and see if I can make heads or tails of what they are telling me

I chat messaged you some screen shots…please review

@paul Got a question sir - Why so many routes here for re-balancing?

routes-paul

I might be costing @Fletcher dearly?

ps- this might not be the correct place to post this query…

Your channel with Fletcher is not likely to be costing anything significant in fees (my node at 1% is probably the most expensive step in the route – you can always close your channel with my node if that is a concern). I assume you have both reached an agreement on the ratio of inbound/outbound for the channel between your two nodes or who should manage it, so rebalance transactions should be infrequent. Whoever does the rebalance transactions is the one who pays the fees. But these are Lightning fees, which tend to be quite small.

Where it would start to cost him would be if you get into a dispute over what that ratio should be, and he either has to force-close the channel or do a swap to splice in more liquidity on his side, which would cost base-layer fees.

It’s my bitcoin addiction that is costing me, not the lightning fees
