I see that Start9 has completely removed Knots from the Start9 registry and the only option now is pre-rdts Knots in the Community registry. Is this temporary or a change of heart?
I don’t think it is hostile. It is necessary. Bitcoin Knots pre-RDTS is no longer maintained by Luke (it will need to be replaced by a new node implementation – maybe a fork of Knots, such as what I am planning to do). Bitcoin Knots RDTS is frozen, and now deprecated after the POW algorithm change. And Bitcoin Knots current is incompatible with all the vanilla services which integrate with your node (electrs, mempool, Datum Gateway, LND, Core Lightning, etc, etc, etc). They will need to list Knots as a separate service that doesn’t take the Bitcoin node slot (because it breaks everything else that integrates with that slot).
Makes sense, but why remove it completely? The new version of Knots is out. They could add a disclaimer to it that other services might function with it or list it in a different section.
I don’t have any insight into Start9, but my guess is they are already working on giving it its own new slot, and that is just the first step. We’ll see in the coming days which way it goes (I could be wrong). I wouldn’t take it as a sign of hostility, since there is a perfectly logical reason. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until there is evidence otherwise.
Yeah I’m not trying to accuse them of anything and giving them the benefit of doubt. Just asking, I wasn’t sure if they had said something against it as I don’t keep up with a lot of social media.
Because it’s entirely different software that does something different. There’s no point in leaving the old software that doesn’t work on the registry for people to accidentally download.
