Formatting external drive with ext4

I’m on the hunt for external drive for backing up the Start9 servers but I see that I have to format with ext4 but unfortunately I cant format them using a Mac or a PC without using third party tool’s.

So, I imagine to solve this issue would be to flash Ubuntu on a USB stick that will be boot-able and then use ubuntu disk utilities to format drives to ext?

Yes. Just boot into Ubuntu, plug in the drive, and open the drive in GParted. From GParted, delete any partitions that were already on the drive, and then create a new partition of type ext4.
