Notes

The web interface to miner has a dropdown for coin type, but only SIA coin is available to pick. This is the newest firmware from manufacturer’s webpage and has a 2022 date.

I went looking for the setting to switch to testnet4 and upon not finding, saw I had updates available for both Bitcoin Knots Blake2b and Datum Gateway Blake2b on Umbrel (thanks Paul!). I will first re-run my report, before switching over to testnet4 for more testing.

Here is my updated report, after updating my Umbrel node to the newest Bitcoin Knots Blake2b and Datum Gateway Blake2b. This has extra details, added by Paul’s updates.

Do you think this ePIC SC200 miner ~ 1.8TH @ 900W (on “eco mode” per AI) is worth it? Seeing one online for ~$100 USD (no PSU/Cables), but not sure if it’s worth it.

I am a hobby miner, with no expectation of making any profit with mine.

I found a Dell power supply for $140, with the six pin cables, on ebay.

Had to also get a 240v power cable, since the add for my SC200 said it only runs on 240v, but I think it may be switchable internally, to run on 120v. Also, the power supply does not have power cables for the 2 fans on the SC200. I have a exhaust fan, used on my laser cutter, with 6" duct hose (like a clothes dryer vent) that I attached to one end of mine and it does a good job of keeping it cool, even when running the miner at 1300 watts.

I am able to run the cooling fan off solar, to keep my electric costs down.

The SC200 seems to work, but it is not really economical (yet?). More of a experiment to get your feet wet and learn on. I have a couple of Bitaxes that I have run on the other chain and they are basically toys, but fun to learn on as well.

Main reason, to get the SC200 would be, we don’t know when more miners might be available. If you can get one for ~$100, you are well ahead of me. I paid $279 for mine, without the power supply.

If you need a tool to learn about setting up mining, go for it. You can run the SC200 at 500 watts and probably be happy as a lotto miner and not break the bank on electricity costs. May never pay for itself, but we will not know, without trying. You can wait and hope for new and more efficient miners to come available, but expect them to cost much more. It’s a tradeoff of getting a “cheap” miner now but pay more in electricity or wait and pay more for a better(?) miner later, for less costs in electricity usage.

The fan power cables plug into the sc200 near the power 6 pin connectors. Facing the ethernet port , the front fan plugs into the left side and the rear fan plugs into the right side. Also my sc200 and power supply work on 120v, but I don’t push it to max settings. I did have order a 120v power cable for my psi. The sc200 is just looking for 12vdc, it doesn’t care if the psu is 240v or 120v. Just make sure your outlet can handle the amp draw. A Killawatt meter is a good thing to have to check and make sure you are not overloading your house circuit.

Since I already have my high volume exhaust fan running off solar, I will probably continue as-is for now, but very good to know if it fails, I can run the miner’s fans from those connectors.
