That’s not normal. Which step in the process shows that error? This might be a good question to ask on the Start9 community forum in case others have seen it.
You might try shutting down all the services, optionally taking a backup (just because this is a good opportunity to take one), and restarting your server (from the UI). Then start each service up again in order of dependency (waiting for health checks to pass for each). Then once everything is up and healthy, see if adding the onion service works.
I just switched off my vpn (surfshark), and it worked. I got a tor address Unfortunately bitnodes.io doesn’t want to load. DNS address could not be found
I’m syncing fulcrum, which is kind of like wading through treacle . You mentioned a backup, which of course always makes sense. But…I don’t have the means to do a backup. I would need another machine with a 2 TB drive, which is not an option right now. Anyway, I wanted to signal for BIP-110 in this critical time, which is achieved. If anything goes pear-shaped before I have a backup, I can start over with what I have.
BTW, when Start9 creates a backup of Knots, it doesn’t include the blockchain data, only your configurations. So you can create a backup on a much smaller drive if you have one. They recommend not using a USB thumb drive though, since they are more likely to fail when you need them the most.
Hi Paul, Hunter here again. I managed to acquire a GMKtec G3, but its lightly used, therefore my question to you is would you have any reservations with using a used G3? I doubt there’s much risk of it being tampered with?
Thanks,
Yes, I think the risk is low. If you are paranoid, you could reflash the bios (though that comes with its own risk of bricking the device if done incorrectly). I would say just replace the NVMe (or at least make sure it is completely wiped) and remove any USB dongles, etc if any are plugged into it.
Thanks Paul, i hoped that’s what you would say. New NVMe going in to it anyway and everything looks as it should so hopefully all goes to plan! Excited to follow your tutorial and get set up now Thanks again
I finally got my start9 set up on my lenovo m700. The problem I have now is that I cannot connect to it from my everyday computer using “http://start.local”. The miniPC is still connected to the internet via ethernet cable, because i could not get the miniPC connected to the wifi via the AC600 wifi adapter. I think the reason is that when trying to run\install StartOS, i went into Bios and excluded all other usb’s, ssd’s, etc. and my wifi adapter is on a usb stick. does this seem like a reasonable place to start? Looking at the bios boot up settings. Or should I be able to get onto the server even if its connected to the internet via an ethernet cable?
The ethernet is more reliable than wifi. If the cord is plugged into the same router that supplies your wifi, then it should be reachable, and switching the connection to wifi would not change anything. If you have a wifi router as a sub-network (which shows up as two wifi networks), then things could get more complicated. Also check to make sure you are plugged into a LAN port on the router (not the WAN port)
What OS is running on your everyday computer? If it is Windows, be sure to install Bonjour (or reinstall it and reboot if it is already on there).
If you have a mobile phone, try connecting it to the wifi and see if it will load http://start.local
