Ditching Braiins Hashpower: MiningRigRentals Simplified with Pickhash

I published my latest Bitcoin tutorial HERE. In this video I introduce a new tool I built to help fight in the ongoing spam war. Pickhash allows you to automate and simplify renting Bitcoin hashrate from MiningRigRentals.com

abundant mines tweeted this a few days ago:

At Abundant Mines, we believe our clients should decide how their miners participate in the Bitcoin network’s search for consensus, and they have the right to direct their energy to what they believe is right for Bitcoin. Clients hosting with us can now choose to signal BIP-110 through our DATUM signaling node, or continue mining as they do today. Your miners. Your hashrate. Your choice.

How viable is this option? is it easier?

Much thanks again Paul… super responsive to challenges as they arise

Abundant Mines is a place where you can host your machines that you own. They do not rent hash.

As for their statement: I’m glad to see they took the path that a host operation should take. Your Miners, Your Hashrate. Your choice.

Sazminig has offered a similar statement. I commend them as well.

I understand now, thank you for that

Still looking if it works and what to do.. See screenshot for feedback.

That first message just says the available rigs are more expensive than the rate cap set for the session, so it couldn’t fill up to your target hash rate without paying more than you want. The cap can be increased in your next session if you are willing to pay more to get the hashrate, otherwise it should resolve as the market fluctuates and cheaper rentals appear (you’ll just be mining under your overall targeted hashrate in the mean time)

I’m not sure on the red frowning face since it seems to be showing 96.64% of the reported hash rate if I’m reading it correctly, which usually gives you a green smiling face. What do you see in the My Rentals > Current Rentals > SHA246 Asicboost tab?

One of the main issues I run into is related to difficulty. For the slower rigs, they want a lower minimum difficulty and fewer shares between adjustment. For the faster rigs, they run at a much higher difficulty and they often don’t like starting out at a low number. And any time the issue is related to the difficulty property, MRR seems to judge on the side of the rig operator when they under perform (so you don’t get a refund for the reduced hashrate)

I added a few features to the latest version of Pickhash to help (be sure to update if you haven’t yet!) It has a fallback to Ocean which the rig operator can switch to if their rig is refusing any work (which the high hashrate ones often do when they don’t like the low starting difficulty) It means you aren’t mining your own templates anymore, but at least you are still signalling for BIP-110 if you find a block and you get your wasted sats back (since MRR would not refund them). It basically operates as a stand-in for the refund that you wouldn’t otherwise get. It also sends a pool update message if the rig operator is not on the ball and updating their rig to the fallback after some time. This results in the rig mining to the wrong pool if they don’t switch, in which case MRR will rule in your favor for the refund. And the ranking system will blacklist the worst rigs so that they are not picked again in the future, and will bump up the best performing rigs so that they are reused if they are available again.

The other thing is tweaking the settings in Datum Gateway itself. Since most of the high hashrate rigs are less picky about a low starting difficulty (since they quickly get ramped up to a high difficulty anyway) than the low hashrate rigs are about too high a minimum difficulty, the sweet spot seems to be:

Minimum Difficulty: 4096
Target Shares per Minute: 16
Difficulty Update Speed: 4

For reference (in case you need to change them back) the origional defaults for these are:

Minimum Difficulty: 16384
Target Shares per Minute: 8
Difficulty Update Speed: 8

But these probably need further refinement based on the specific failures (and there are more knobs in Datum Gateway to tinker with). I’ll keep tweaking them and post an update if I find a better configuration.

Okay it needs more practice and loss of sats
The session on MRR is finished but in Pickhash it says ‘winding down’ don’t know why we can not start a new session?

I see in Pickhash/History there is a option to “blacklist” a rig. Does this build on my ranking system if I blacklist myself?

Message from rig owner:

No share.hashrate from pool you use
Change a pool or configurations
You just lose time and money

That particular operator took 361x2 but there was no refund. I imagine the 0% Delivered didn’t trip the under - performance flag. The 361x2 is not worth disputing but dont want the server hitting my bids again

Maybe…Winding down is just spending the remaining sats the last 2 rigs cost. They haven’t showed ended yet. Have you got a history report for session yet?

no history report on pick hash so far. w’ll wait and see. history of MRR in screenshot

I dunno.

Green triangles - rejected shares are elevated on this rental.
Red triangles - rejected shares significantly elevated on this rental. Fallback pool (OCEAN) is active.

Changing those seems to have attracted a lot of 200 Th/s miners. I was aiming for higher rentals (1 Ph/s range)

You think its possible to pause session…re-tweek Datum back to defaults and continue session or do I lose those sats already deducted ?

You should be able to retweak while it is running (Datum will restart, would be a short blip outage, which they either will ignore or will fallback to Ocean if you have that config set)

Yes, the settings I mentioned are geared toward the smaller hashrate rigs and away from the larger ones. I was losing a lot on the smaller rigs before changing to these settings, and the larger rigs swap to Ocean pool and get ranked out if they can’t handle starting on a lower difficulty. There unfortunately is not one good setting to satisfy both ends of the spectrum.

I thought of forking Datum Gateway to taylor it for MRR rather than trying to shoe-horn it into a use case that it isn’t really designed for. But not enough time for that before BIP-110 mandatory signalling, so that idea probably doesn’t materialize.

BTW, if you use Stop session, it doesn’t cancel anything, it just stops renting more rigs. The current ones play out for their rented duration.

Kind of what I thought but wanted to confirm, Thanks

Today de winding down is finished and there is a history in pickhash. Any feedback is welcome. See screenshot:

Since I rent in Ph/s per day I think Ill forgo tweaking Datum and go back to default. Way to many smaller miners are trying to get a piece of the pie and many of them are Degraded.

No real feedback other than to say it looks like you are renting well under 1 Ph/s?

Otherwise your screenshot looks fine. Do you have specific concerns about your recent rental?
